How to build a financial plan like a scientist?

Three aspects of scientific approach can make your financial plan robust.

  1. Have A Brutally Honest Null Hypothesis: If there was a default financial planning assumption that you must disprove with evidence, it would be "If I do nothing different, I will not meet my financial goals.” Our job as collaborators is to review the data, design a plan, evaluate scenarios, and execute a strategy that effectively rejects that null hypothesis.  A rigorous plan doesn’t assume success; it strives to achieve it.
  2. Build Your Experiment With Robust Controls: How would you know if your financial “experiment” is succeeding or drifting off course? In personal finance, performance attribution relative to benchmarks assesses whether your results are due to your decisions and strategy or to extraneous factors. What happens if you change nothing? Having no plan is one control that you may already be running. Let us design a protocol that fits your needs.
  3. Always Run Samples In Triplicates: Just like in a lab, no financial plan is credible without replication. Yet most people build their financial lives on a single set of assumptions — one income path, one market path, one retirement path. That’s not planning; that’s wishful thinking. A real financial plan tests multiple scenarios: best‑case, base‑case, and worst‑case. Probability-based planning adds multiplicity, so your future isn’t dependent on a single projected outcome but survives a whole range of scenarios.
